A first-time trip to London, England, a week of advanced cut & colour training (the British way) at the famed Toni & Guy Academy on Oxford Street…what’s not to like?

“Nothing!” exclaimed Lauren Modica, senior stylist at J. Gordon Designs, in Lincoln Park. “We loved every minute.” Both Lauren and Janette Orozco received a Cosmetologists Chicago Presidents Scholarship this year that covered the tuition for their trip, and enabled them to continue their education…in the academy, and on the streets, in restaurants, and at all the sights to see in London.

 So what did they learn?

Lauren workingAccording to Lauren, the five-day session at Toni & Guy Academy in London really sparked her creativity as a hairstylist. “It’s easy to go on auto-pilot to get through the day in the salon. But by immersing myself in the key concepts of block coloring, root stretching, and disconnected cuts in the amazing atmosphere of the Toni & Guy London Academy, I really had to stretch myself. As all techniques we learned revolved around pre-sectioning for maximum speed and cleanliness, and my clients will benefit from my trip too.”

Lauren offers the technique she learned to create the beautiful blonde model.

“The end result is a soft powdery tone-on-tone blonde.  It’s produced using a puddle sectioning technique (concentric circles with irregular edges, think oil spill or cloud shape). Alternate on-scalp pre-lightener, and a violet based level 10 demi with added violet tone. Once applied and starting to oxidize, the level ten was stretched with a comb to blend away the line of demarcation.  Pre-lightened sections were toned with a violet acidic deposit only color. Cut was undercut for sleek sides and disconnected top, visually blended with channel cutting.

“This opportunity reminded me why I love this industry,” adds Lauren, “and how lucky I am to be a part of it.  Thank you Cosmetologists Chicago, and the Presidents Scholarship Committee, for extending to me this privilege.  I truly had the experience of a lifetime, learning new and exciting techniques, and soaking in the styles in a new city.”

We think both of these stylists represent the professional possibilities that membership in Cosmetologists Chicago offers to every salon professional who joins us. If you are not a member, now is the time to join! You could win a Presidents Scholarship for advanced education, too!

Why don’t we have a Braiding link in the category section? Bonnie Bates the current braiding chairman for Cosmetologists Illinois has a wonderful display of braids on her website. Some she will be teaching at America’s Beauty Show in March, 2015.
